Planning your Gap Year
A little bit nervous? Think you’re going to miss something out? Embarking on a life changing trip is so course an amazing experience however it is important to keep your feet on the ground when it comes to the planning. It is our job at Gap Discovery to do all the hard work so you can enjoy yourselves and come back a developed individual. There are a few hints and tips we will give you along the way so you can make the most of your experience
Options
Gap Years has adopted slightly over the years now programs range from 1 week onwards. A Gap Year doesn’t have to last for a year, if you are interested in taking a bit of time out to do something different in the holidays these programs fit in perfectly. It is important to try and link in a program that fits with what you want to do in the future. For Example a student that is interested in teaching might go and Volunteer in a School in Kenya and gain a TEFL qualification (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Gap Discovery will asses which programs meet your requirements and discuss them with you in detail. There are over 200 programs to choose from, so choose wisely!
Why a Gap Year is a good idea
Experience
– Learning about the World and how different cultures interact is a great set up for the future. Being able to adapt to different situations will make you a stronger more rounded individual.
Meeting new people
– Chatting to fellow explorers will give you a great insight to what is around and also how a wide variety of people view different situations.
Develop as an individual
– Every second when you are travelling is a new experience. A steep learning curve will be apparent upon your return
Helps you focus
– It might sound strange however we have found individuals become more focus when they return from their trip. They understand the World more and are able direct themselves towards a certain goal.
Looks great on your C.V
– As long as you take part in a trip that is productive and interests you then it can boost your CV to a higher level. For example Our Medical program based in Kenya would enhance a University 2nd year Medical students C.V. As would a the Coaching Course in South Africa for a Sport studies student
Finances
Always a tricky one! There are a few options for you to take:
Work and save in the UK for 6-9 months then Travel
This is a popular option many individuals decide to take. If you are living at home with parents then hopefully rent will be quite cheap which will enable you to save more quicker. Gap Discovery has a good relationship with many recruitment agencies over the UK that can help you out with a job. It does however mean that you have to be stuck in the UK and not gallivanting around the World!
Work and Travel (at the same time)
There are some great working programs. From bar work in Australia to teaching in Japan, this is certainly the way to see the World. One thing to remember is that saving will be tricky and budgeting is very important.
What/When/Where?
With over 200 programs in 20 Countries there is certainly plenty to choose from. With start dates very often you will never miss the boat! The team at Gap Discovery will guide and advise you as much as we can however at the end of the day it is your trip and your experience. Simple factors like; Climate, Seasons, Cost of Travel, National holidays and events all come into play when we start planning.
Approximately 70% of the individuals we send away travel by themselves. Our Facebook site is great place to meet fellow travellers doing the same program as you and interact with them before you leave.
Accommodation
This can certainly range depending on where you are going and what you are doing. From a shack on a beach in Fiji to a tent on the foot hills of Himalaya’s variation is the exciting part! With all Risk assessments passed accommodation is clean, tidy and suitable for travellers.
